Troutsdale Farm Shropshire Breed lamb

A taste of the South West Peak District - from our farm to your plate

Heritage Breed

The 'Shropshire Breed' of sheep originates from the hills of North Staffordshire and Shropshire in the mid 1800's and has THE oldest pedigree flock book society in the UK .... we're bringing the breed back home!

Pasture Fed

Our sheep graze our pasture grasslands on the South West Peak District  - simple - we only feed extra IF the season and the animal requires it - but most of our lamb is reared just on grass

Slow grown

Our lamb .... is slow grown, at its natural pace, and is only 'ready when it is ready'

The Shrophsire Breed

Thank your for supporting our traditional heritage breed flock ....
  • One of THE oldest Pedigree Breeds in the UK
  • With THE oldest Pedigree Flock Book Society in the UK (and 2nd oldest in the World!)
  • Originating from the hills of North Staffordshire and Shropshire in the mid 1800's (previously known as the Staffordshire Shropshire breed - but over the years the 'Staffordshire part in the name was dropped)
  • For us - it is all about increasing the numbers of this very special local regional breed to this area ... our girls are very much loved - any meat is a secondary thing, but one that does also support the work we do with the flock and the breed. These animals are all born on the farm and as many as possible stay on the farm (because we just love them all) and they still work in family groups, we know who is who's Grandma or great great grandaughter or son! some go on to create more individuals flocks and therefore increase the gene pool and numbers of THE BREED WITH THE OLDEST PEDIGREE FLOCK BOOK SOCIETY .... now that is something special!
  • We also produce our own wool and sheepskins rugs which we cure with natural salt by hand before sending off to one of the last remaining tannery places in the UK that does them in the traditional way.... which takes about 30+ weeks!

The Shropshire Breed ....

At Troutsdale Farm we started with just 3 very special sheep - and all our girls and boys are breed from these 3 very special sheep - and we have helped to take the breed from 'Rare Breed' status to 'Traditional Breed by doing so - for us it is about the breed - our heritage breeds - and a breed that is a regional breed to this area.

The Shropshire Sheep Breed Society

Our traditional heritage breed flock ....
  • THE oldest Pedigree Flock Book Society in the UK (and 2nd oldest in the World!)
  • The Shropshire breed has long been in integral part of the sheep scene in Britian.
  • The breed emerged in the mid- 1800's to the native heath sheep of North Staffordshire and Shropshire to become the supreme meat breed of the late nineteenth century.
  • Founded in 1882 and publishing its first Flock Book in 1883, the Shropshire Sheep Breeders' Association and Flock Book Society has the distinction of being the oldest recorded sheep breed society in the UK.
  • A major attribute is the the breed's ability to graze reliably amongst conifers and orchards without damaging trees.  Its value as an eco-friendly, cost-effective weed suppressant is increasingly borne out on large plantations in England, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and Europe.
  • Shropshire ewes make excellent mothers.  Long-lived, milky and prolific, they successfully rear multiples, producing lambs over many years.
  • Rams are robust with good confirmation - renowned for producing strong, active lambs with quick growth rates and lean, long, top-quality carcasses.
